Hawkesbury Regional Gallery – Frank Nowlan Catalogue

Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, is a public art gallery space located within the landmark Deerubbin Centre in Windsor.  The gallery offers a changing program of exhibitions and public programs ranging from media, craft, photography and design for people of all ages. Their vision for the space is to always remain true to their ‘artistic and creative heritage, while showcasing new and original works and exhibitions that are thought-provoking, challenging and educational.’  Its walls feature numerous noteworthy artists and exhibition from around Australia, ranging from modernist, postmodernist and contemporary works. One of their most prominent artists, Frank Nowlan, who only began his artistic career in his 50’s, dreams up his creations from home in Thirroul (and what darn good creations they are). His work depicts the local Thirroul area and surrounds, showcasing its history, architecture and characters real and imagined through a renowned style of idiosyncratic painting, his bright, honest works evoking memories of childhood. Much to our delight, Hawkesbury gallery presented his latest exhibition ‘Frank Nowlan: Man of the Series’ which encapsulates a variety of his best works completed throughout his celebrated career.  The gallery approached us to make a catalogue which would be utilized as a beautiful keepsake and testament to accompany the exhibition.  Being big Nowlan fans, we were honoured to be chosen for this most exciting endeavor. We designed the book to create a place where Nowlan’s works to be viewed in much detail and sophistication, so the layout and typeface throughout its pages was a carefully considered process.   We used only the finest inks and stock to communicate the rich tones and colour a key element throughout his paintings, with Nowlan himself once stating “I can’t draw very well but possibly I’ve got some feeling for colour.”  That you do sir, that you do.  We believe that this catalogue is perfection itself, a testament to Frank Nowlan, reflecting the personality and meaning found within his paintings but and the beating heart Hawkesbury Regional Gallery.  Want to have a flick through some more artist’s work?  Drop by the studio and say hello.
