Salvesen Font, A Custom Typeface

The latest of our love projects started as a studio project for a client, which we then fleshed out into a series of custom fonts. And the best part? We’re offering the whole range to the world for free! We all love free stuff after all.

Originally developed for the cover art of an EP, Salvesen is an understated and elegant custom font now available for download exclusively through dafont

Our love projects allow us to pursue creative tangents, upskill and be reminded of why we do what we do. Typography is one of those things that gets designers really excited. It requires attention to detail, finesse and a significant amount of patience. Usually focusing on a word or short phrase, it’s a real treat to be able to complete an entire alphabet.

The first in our series of custom fonts was Swish, a decorative typeface inspired by a torn piece of fabric. It has been available on dafont for about three months and we’re more than a little chuffed to be able to say that it’s had over 8,000 downloads in that time. It feels pretty good to know that our font has found a place in so many people’s projects.

Our latest offering is Salvesen, a font originally developed for the album artwork of Atlas B Salvesen‘s EP Smoke Signals. We wanted the cover art to be understated but special – something that would stand the test of time and still be appreciated – so we created custom lettering.

The inspiration was the EP’s namesake – smoke and the shapes it can create. The contrast between thick and thin lines references the substance’s ever changing nature, constantly evolving. A slight lean to the right makes the font almost italicised and brings to mind forward motion.

Once we’d finished the artwork project, we realised that we weren’t done with the lettering yet. We decided to follow the creative pull and develop a whole alphabet in that style. And boy are we glad we did – we couldn’t be happier with the result.

Salvesen Font is understated and elegant, with just enough edge to make you look twice. In the two and a half weeks that it’s been available it has been downloaded almost 5,500 times, so it seems like other people think we did a good job too! If you think it would be right for your next project feel free to grab it from dafont – it would be our pleasure.
