How many models does it take to start a socially conscious movement? Just one, if you are Olivia Henderson. Single handedly putting us all to shame; not only does this model citizen have brains, beauty and a bad-ass attitude but she is using all of these excellent attributes to start something pretty damn cool.
Initially Ollie begun her Start The Riot project by hand printing 100 T-shirts each with a positive political slogan on it and handed them out to her friends and colleagues to wear during Australian fashion week. A very clever move if you want to stick it to the man; considering a heady mix of babes and politics will usually get a whole bunch of international media attention.
A project that encourages young people to become involved and politically aware, Start The Riot uses fashion as an accessible medium and communicator
Less Monica Lewinsky and more of a widespread positive response, it was upon this attention that that Ollie started building The House of Riot. An extension of the t-shirt project, the House Of Riot is for the believers. For those with something to say and those who know there are something’s that are worth standing up for.
The House is all about giving power to the people. It currently includes an online magazine, a Facebook page that works as an online community, a shop for tee shirts and a coming campaign. All of which are governed by the following mantra:
WE ARE THE FUTURE.
WE CAN BE THE CHANGE.
UNITED WE ARE STRONG.
STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN.
USE YOUR VOICE.
START THE RIOT!
At IYBI we are massive fans of doing good, but we especially love the way that this project begun and continues to grow organically. Born out of a frustration and dissatisfaction with the current sate of affairs on Australia, it has grown into a project that encourages young people to become involved and politically aware, using fashion as an accessible medium and communicator.
Realise it or not, the clothes you chose to wear are an extension of your personality. They communicate something about you to the outside world. So why not wear clothes that actually mean something?
We know you that you are more than just a crop top and a pair of daisy dukes, but do the rest of the population? So join us, grab a t-shirt, drink the delicious kool-aid and Start The Riot!Web Facebook
